How do you choose a name for a YouTube channel?

Pick a name that says what the channel is about or who it is from, that is easy to say and spell, and whose @handle is still free. This tool gives you twelve ideas at a time from your name, your topic and words for your kind of channel, such as Baking with Maya, The Sweet Kitchen or Maya's Pantry, and turns each into a handle that fits YouTube's rules, so the name and the handle can match.

For "Maya" and "bread, baking" as a cooking channel, the tool can make 128 names, all with handles inside YouTube's 30-character limit; More ideas shows them twelve at a time without repeating any.

How to find a channel name

  1. Type your words Your name, and what the channel is about.
  2. Pick the kind of channel Ten kinds, from cooking to pets.
  3. Check the handle Then look it up on YouTube.

How do I find a channel name here?

Type your name in the first box if you want it in the channel name (it is optional), and a few words about the channel in the second: the topic, a dish, a game, a skill. Choose the kind of channel from the ten buttons and press Make channel names. Twelve names appear, each with the @handle made from it under it, marked Alliteration when its main words start with the same letter. Copy puts a name on your clipboard, Check puts its handle in the checker, and More ideas shows the next twelve.

The figure shows the first twelve for the sample: Fresh Flavours, The Sweet Kitchen, Hungry Plates and nine more.

What kinds of names does it make?

Five patterns that read naturally. A feeling and a thing: Sweet Baking, Hungry Plates, Spicy Bakes. A place with a feeling: The Sweet Kitchen, The Cozy Table. Your name and what you make: Maya Bakes, Maya Eats. Your topic with you: Baking with Maya. And your own place: Maya's Pantry. Your topic words join the word lists, so with "bread" typed in you also get names such as Homemade Bread. Each kind of channel has its own lists: for cooking, words such as Bakes, Recipes, Plates and Treats, places such as Kitchen, Table, Pantry and Bakery, and feelings such as Hungry, Homemade, Golden and Cozy.

Pairs from one word stem, such as Crafty Crafts, are left out.

How long should a channel name be?

Short enough to read at a glance under a video and to type into search, and with a handle that matches it. YouTube's help page on changing a channel name gives no length limit, but handles must be 3 to 30 characters, so the tool keeps every name to 40 characters and checks every handle. The table shows the first six names the tool made for the sample, with their lengths and their handles' lengths.

The longest of the 128 names the sample words can make is 20 characters, and every one of their handles fits.

What is a YouTube handle, and what are its rules?

A handle is your channel's unique @name, and part of its web address: youtube.com/@ and the handle. YouTube's help page on handles sets the rules this tool checks: 3 to 30 characters, made of letters or numbers from one of 75 supported languages, with underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots allowed but not at the start or the end, and not looking like a web address or a phone number. Handles are not case-sensitive, so @MayaBakes and @mayabakes are the same handle.

The tool makes each handle from its name's letters and numbers, in lower case, and adds periods between words only if the plain handle would be longer than 30 characters.

The handle checker with maya.bakes. typed in: crossed as a YouTube handle because it ends with a period, crossed on X because of the periods, and ticked for Discord, with profile links below
A handle that ends with a period is refused.

Can I check a handle I already like?

Yes. Type it in the checker, with or without the @, and it is checked as you type. Some the checker caught: maya.bakes. ends with a period, which YouTube does not allow; mb is too short, since handles need at least 3 characters; mayasverylongbreadbakingkitchen is 31 characters, one over the limit; mayabakes.com looks like a web address. The checker also shows whether the same name works as a username on X and Discord, useful if you want one name everywhere.

Look it up opens the handle's address on YouTube, and the profile addresses on Instagram, TikTok, X, Twitch and GitHub, so you can see whether it is taken.

Can I change my channel name later?

Yes, but not often: YouTube's help page on channel details says you can change your channel name twice within 14 days, and that changing it removes your verification badge if you have one. So it is worth taking a little time now.

A name that still fits if the channel grows beyond its first topic saves a change later: The Sweet Kitchen leaves more room than Bread with Maya.

More ideas: twelve new names.

Why are the ideas the same each time?

The tool is repeatable on purpose: the same name, topic and kind of channel always give the same list, so a name you liked is still there when you come back. More ideas pages through that list twelve at a time; for the sample words, the second twelve shared no name with the first, and ten rounds pass before a name comes round again. Change a word or the kind of channel for a different list.

Names whose main words begin with the same letter, such as Fresh Flavours or Clutch Clips, are spread through the list and marked Alliteration: they tend to be easy to remember.

A gaming channel, with retro as the topic.

Which kinds of channel does it cover?

Ten: cooking, gaming, tech, fitness, travel, music, beauty, learning, crafts and DIY, and pets and animals. Each has eight words for what the channel makes, three for what it does, four places and eight feelings, all chosen for that kind of channel: gaming has Plays, Quests, Clips and Arcade, travel has Journeys, Trails and Compass, music has Beats, Sessions and Stage. For any other topic, choose the nearest kind and type your topic words: they are used in the names too.

For the sample words, between one and six of each kind's first twelve names were alliterative. The figure shows a travel channel for Maya with the topic word mountains, which turns up in Mountains with Maya.

What makes a good channel name?

One that tells a stranger what they will get or whose channel it is, before they click: Baking with Maya does both. Easy to say aloud, because people recommend channels by saying them. Free as a handle, ideally on the other sites you post on too, so viewers find you everywhere under one name. And not tied to a detail you may outgrow, such as a year or one product.

Read your favourites aloud and look each handle up before deciding.

Can my handle be the same on other sites?

Often, if you choose it with that in mind. YouTube allows longer handles and more characters than some other sites: X usernames stop at 15 characters and take only letters, numbers and underscores, so thesweetkitchen (15 characters) fits there too, but thefreshbakery.co would not. The checker shows the YouTube, X and Discord rules side by side for any handle, and the profile links let you see at once whether it is free on each site.

For more username ideas built for those sites, use the Username Generator.

What names does it make for other kinds of channel?

The first names it made for the same sample words ("Maya" and "bread, baking") in each kind of channel show how much the word lists change the result. Gaming: Midnight Moments, Epic Clips, Pixel Plays. Tech: Curious Codes, Smart Setups, Quick Circuits. Fitness: Steady Sessions, Strong Stretches, Daily Workouts. Travel: Maya's Map, Sunny Escapes, The Wandering Compass. Music: Music with Maya, The Acoustic Booth, Mellow Melodies. Beauty: Bold Blends, The Soft Room, Pretty Shades. Learning: Maths with Maya, The Clever Academy. Crafts and DIY: Cozy Creations, Maya Crafts, Rustic Designs. Pets and animals: Wild Whiskers, Furry Friends, Gentle Whiskers.

Your topic words appear in every kind, which is why "Epic Baking" turned up for gaming: type words that fit the kind you pick.

Should my channel be named after me or after the topic?

Either works, and the tool offers both. A name with your own name in it, such as Maya Bakes, Baking with Maya or Maya's Pantry, suits a channel where you are what people come back for, and it follows you if you change topic. A topic name, such as The Sweet Kitchen or Hungry Plates, tells new viewers at once what they will get, and suits a channel more than one person runs. Leave the name box empty to get only topic names.

If you are unsure, read both kinds aloud as if recommending the channel to a friend, and pick the one that sounds natural.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. The names are made in this browser tab from your words and the tool's word lists, without AI; nothing you type reaches HueFold or YouTube. There is no account and no limit. Only clicking a profile link opens that site, as any link does.

Nothing is reserved for you either: a handle is yours only once you claim it on YouTube.

What else helps start a channel?

The YouTube Description Generator writes video descriptions with chapters that follow YouTube's rules, Resize Image for YouTube Banner makes channel art at the right size, and the Username Generator finds usernames for your other profiles. Link In Bio collects your links in one page.
